The Guadalupe Barrio - Santa Fe, New Mexico
The Spanish word "barrio" was originally used to refer to the neighborhood surrounding a church. The Guadalupe Barrio is south of the Santa Fe River along the southwest edge of the historic district of Santa Fe, the 400-year-old capital city of New Mexico.
The Santurio de Guadalupe Church and Shrine was built in 1781and is considered the oldest shrine honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe in the United States. The grounds include the historic adobe church as well as a larger new sanctuary to accommodate the large primarily Spanish-fluent congregation, as well as the outdoors shrine of Our Lady, plus a walking rosary, an Adoration Chapel, a small museum, and a giftshop featuring Catholic educational and inspirational resources, as well as Guadalupe santos, holy items, and locally-created images of Our Lady.

The Guadalupe Barrio is one of Santa Fe's oldest neighborhoods and a leisurely stroll through the streets reveals many images, nichos, paintings, statues, and tilework dedicated to Our Lady.
Alto Street is one of Santa Fe's most famous "Camino Pequenos" or "little streets" which wind narrowly amidst historic adobe's along the old footpaths and original cow trails that eventually evolved into roads over the years. |
Alto Street meanders along the south side of the Santa Fe River and connects the Santuario on the corner of Guadalupe Street with Ambrosio Street to the west. A walk through the www.communitylearningnetwork.org/Louis Montano Park across from the Santa Fe Boys and Girls Club and continuing west towards Saint Francis Street on the dirt road along the river will reveal an extraordinary collection of locally-painted murals by Carlos Cervantes and other regional artists depicting the Spanish, Mexican, Aztec, and Indigenous influences in the history and culture of the region.
The Guadalupe Barrio is roughly outlined as follows: Guadalupe Street to the east and Saint Francis Street to the west West Alameda Street to the north and Agua Fria Street to the south |

Highlighted Events from the Past:

Saturday, April 30th is NeighborDay and we are celebrating!
Join us for walk or some coffee...or both!
10am - Guadalupe Neighborhood Walk-about.
Meet at the statue of Guadalupe (at the church on the corner of Guadalupe street between Alto and Agua Fria) We will start our stroll down Alto to Ambrosio and loop back to the church. Wear comfortable shoes and bring your stories, and maybe a camera - there are many hidden architectural treasures and murals, as well as "Guadalupes!" And for those who may not walk, come out and say hi when we pass by! Its a great day to say hello!
11am to 12noon - Guadalupe Neighborhood Meet Up. Stop by Indulge & Ma Chérie coffee shop and patisserie at 317 Aztec St for a quick hello. Meet neighbors AND enjoy the "Neighbor Discount" of 10% off your morning "indulgences" (by the way, you won't believe the outstanding chocolate chip cookies are gluten free...but yes, they are!). We will only be there for an hour, though, but do stop by and say hi!
For more information, visit the Guadalupe Project page under the Special Projects menu on the website of the locally-born and Guadalupe-District- based non-profit www.communitylearningnetwork.org
